Doubling, rung by rung
Seven doublings from a dollar, and the ceiling that ends them
Starting at $1, a $100 stake ceiling allows seven rungs, and seven straight misses at 2.00× turn up about once every 104 attempts. Doubling does not shrink the edge; it enlarges the turnover the edge is charged on.

What the ladder is
Stake a dollar with the automatic cash-out at 2.00×. Win and you are up a dollar and start again. Lose and you stake $2, so that the next win repays the first dollar and still leaves a dollar of profit. Lose again and you stake $4, and so on upward.
Each rung is 2 to the power of the losses so far, and everything committed by the time you reach rung n is one dollar short of the next rung. Rung 8 is a $128 bet placed on top of $127 already gone.
The profit is a dollar at rung one and a dollar at rung fourteen, and only the exposure between them grows.
From a one dollar base, the stakes run $1, $2, $4, $8, $16, $32, $64, $128, $256, $512, $1,024, $2,048, $4,096, $8,192. The running totals behind them are $1, $3, $7, $15, $31, $63, $127, $255, $511, $1,023, $2,047, $4,095, $8,191, $16,383.
By rung 10 the player is putting $512 on the table to win the same single dollar rung 1 offered, having already spent $511 to get there. Nobody sits down intending to make that bet, and the ladder is the mechanism for arriving at it without a decision.
The ceiling nobody prints
The ladder ends where the operator’s maximum stake ends, and that maximum is one of the fields no published list carries for this game. The minimum is quoted at 10 cents; the top of the range, like the maximum multiplier and the maximum win, simply is not there. Anyone who needs the number has to read it in the operator’s own table, which is why the per-operator fields are kept as fields on the operator comparison.
So the arithmetic below is run against five plausible ceilings rather than one real one, and the ceiling that matters is whichever one is in force where you are sitting.
What each ceiling is worth
At 2.00× the round misses 51.5 per cent of the time, because 0.97 divided by 2 is the chance of getting there. A ladder of k rungs therefore breaks when 0.515 to the power of k comes up, and the loss when it breaks is the whole running total.
- A $50 ceiling allows 6 rungs, top stake $32. The break comes about once in 54 attempts and costs $63.
- A $100 ceiling allows 7 rungs, top stake $64. Once in 104 attempts, costing $127.
- A $500 ceiling allows 9 rungs, top stake $256. Once in 392 attempts, costing $511.
- A $1,000 ceiling allows 10 rungs, top stake $512. Once in 762 attempts, costing $1,023.
- A $5,000 ceiling allows 13 rungs, top stake $4,096. Once in 5,578 attempts, costing $8,191.
Read the middle line the way the ladder is usually sold and it looks unbeatable: 761 attempts each netting a dollar, and one disaster. But 761 dollars against $1,023 is a loss of $262, and that is not bad luck, it is the arithmetic finishing. Averaged over the whole cycle the ladder turns over $8,735, and 3 per cent of $8,735 is $262. The edge collects on every dollar that crosses the table, and doubling is a machine for pushing more dollars across it. Under the $1,000 ceiling the average stake works out at $5.57 a round against the flat player’s $1.00, and the loss is larger by that same factor and no other.
How long the disaster takes to arrive
Nobody plays 762 attempts as an abstraction, so put the clock on it. An attempt lasts about two rounds on average, since it ends at the first win. Waiting for a run of 7 misses takes roughly 213 rounds, a run of 10 takes about 1,569, and a run of 13 takes about 11,500.
A round runs between 10 and 30 seconds, so an hour holds 120 to 360 of them. The $100 ceiling therefore breaks somewhere between 35 minutes and under two hours of continuous play. The $1,000 ceiling lasts between four and a half hours and thirteen.
Over the same 213 rounds a flat dollar loses $6.38, and the ladder loses $23.90.
That comparison is the whole page. Same game, same published 97 per cent, same cash-out target, and the only thing the ladder changed was how much money went through the machine. Why the rate itself does not move is set out on the return page.
Doubling only balances at exactly 2.00×
The pattern is called doubling because doubling is what repays a loss when the payout is 2 to 1. Choose any other target and the ladder is a different shape, and almost always a steeper one.
Take the cautious setting, 1.20×, which returns 20 cents on the dollar. To recover $1 of losses and keep the 20 cent profit, the next stake has to be $6, and after that $36, then $216, then $1,296. Each rung is six times the last, and a ceiling of $100 stops the climb after three of them.
Three misses at 1.20× come up about once in 142 attempts, and they cost $43. Across the full cycle that is 141 wins of 20 cents against one loss of $43, so $28.20 collected and $43 handed back, a net loss of $14.80 across roughly 174 rounds. A flat dollar over the same stretch loses $5.23. The safe-looking target does not make the ladder safer; it makes each rung six times taller, and the arithmetic arrives sooner in wall-clock terms.
Starting at the minimum does not fix it
The obvious repair is to start smaller. At the 10 cent minimum, the same $100 limit makes room for ten rungs instead of seven, and the run that breaks the ladder now needs 10 misses rather than 7, which is once in 762 attempts instead of once in 104.
The break costs $102.30 and the cycle runs about 1,569 rounds. Across it the player collects 761 payouts of 10 cents, so $76.10, and gives back $102.30. Net loss: $26.20. A flat 10 cent bet over the same 1,569 rounds loses $4.71.
Smaller base, longer survival, larger total loss. The ladder stretched the time and stretched the turnover with it.
The second wall
The ceiling is the wall people talk about. The bankroll is the one they meet first. Reaching rung 10 requires $511 already lost and $512 still available, which means the ladder needs $1,023 of committed capital to protect a one dollar profit, and it needs all of it liquid inside a window measured in minutes.
Neither wall is a flaw in the ladder. Remove both, allow infinite stakes and infinite money, and the expected result per dollar staked is still 97 cents.
That is the difference between a staking pattern and a claim about the round itself. Patterns rearrange your money. Claims about the round are answered by the way the crash point is fixed and published in advance, which is what the seed procedure lets a player confirm, and it is also why splitting a stake across two slots cannot help either.
