Two bets, one crash point, and the same three per cent

Splitting $2 between an early cash-out and a runner turns a round into three outcomes instead of two, and it still gives back exactly 6 cents. Two bets in one round are not two rounds.

Two tickets, one number

Every round opens two bet slots, and the usual instruction for them is to take the first off at 1.20× and let the second ride, one for the rent and one for the story.

The stake was 4.60 and the exit landed at 2.21x, which comes to 10.166 exactly. The game paid 10.16, cutting the fraction rather than rounding it up. Behind the notice the curve is still climbing, which is the part nobody sees before deciding.

What that instruction quietly assumes is that the two slots are independent. They are not. Both settle against a single climbing number, and both are decided by the one height at which it stops, so if the second bet wins the first one has already won by definition. There is no arrangement of targets under which the runner lands and the early ticket does not.

This makes the layout easier to price than it looks, because a round has exactly three possible endings rather than four.

The three endings, with numbers on them

The published return is 97 per cent, and the chance of a round climbing as far as any target m× is 0.97 divided by m, an inference set out at more length in the target comparison. Take the standard pairing: a dollar cashed out automatically at 1.20× and a dollar left to run to 2.00×.

In 19.17 rounds per hundred the number never reaches 1.20 at all, both tickets die together, and the player is $2.00 down. In 32.33 rounds it clears 1.20 and stops short of 2.00, so the early ticket returns 20 cents while the runner loses its whole dollar, leaving the round 80 cents in the red. In the remaining 48.50 rounds it clears both heights and pays 20 cents alongside a full dollar, for a gain of $1.20. Those three lines are the entire game as far as this layout is concerned, and weighting them gives minus 6 cents on $2 staked. Three per cent, to the cent, exactly what the same $2 would have cost sitting on one target in one slot.

That is not a coincidence about this pairing. Expectation adds, so any two stakes at any two targets return 97 per cent of their sum, and no arrangement of the slots can produce anything else.

The middle ending is a loss

Look again at the second of those three endings, because it is the one the whole system is sold on. The early ticket did its job, the round did not collapse, and the player still finished 80 cents down.

That is the general case, not bad luck. When only the early ticket lands, the round earns the early stake multiplied by one less than its target, and loses the runner’s stake outright. For the two to cancel, the early stake has to be at least the runner divided by one less than the early target.

At equal stakes that condition reduces to an early target of 2.00× or higher, which is to say the middle ending breaks even only when the early cash-out is not early. Anything genuinely quick, the 1.10× and 1.20× and 1.50× settings that make the layout feel safe, guarantees that two of the three endings lose money.

Here is the weighting the early stake needs, target by target:

  • at 1.10×, ten times the runner
  • at 1.20×, five times
  • at 1.30×, a little over three times
  • at 1.50×, double
  • at 2.00×, equal stakes and no more

What the protection costs when you buy it

So buy it properly. Put $5 on the 1.20× slot and $1 on the 2.00× slot and the middle ending is repaired: $1.00 profit on the big ticket against $1.00 lost on the small one, dead level.

Now count the whole round. Nineteen times in a hundred it fails at 1.20 and takes $6.00 with it. Thirty-two times it lands in the middle band and leaves the player exactly where they started. The remaining 48.50 rounds reach 2.00 and pay $2.00.

Expected result: minus 18 cents. The middle band was made harmless by putting three times as much money on the table, and the bill went up by exactly the same factor, from 6 cents a round to 18. Nothing was protected. The cost of a bad ending was moved into the price of every ending, at the published rate, and if you play 200 rounds in an hour the difference between the two layouts is $12 against $36.

Where the pair collapses into one bet

Set both slots to the same target and the layout stops existing. Two dollars at 1.20× in separate slots and one $2 bet at 1.20× produce the same three numbers in the same proportions, because the two tickets rise and fall together with nothing between them. The interface is a stake-size control at that point and nothing more.

The 5 to 1 weighting above is the same collapse arriving slowly. When the early ticket carries 83 per cent of the money and returns 20 per cent on it, the runner is a lottery slip stapled to a position that is really a single 1.20× bet.

And at the other end the same thing happens for a different reason. Push the early cash-out down to 1.01× and it lands in 96 rounds out of a hundred for a penny each time, which is a 3 per cent charge dressed as a near certainty. What the split actually buys

Not diversification. Run the standard deviation on $2 staked and the pattern is plain: everything on 1.20× swings by 94 cents a round, the even split across 1.20× plus 2.00× swings by $1.29, everything on 2.00× swings by $2.00, and a split at 1.50× and 3.00× swings by $1.87. Every one of those has a mean of minus 6 cents.

The split sits between the two pure positions, which is the honest description of it. It is a dial, not a hedge.

There is a sharper version of the point. The two tickets in one round have a correlation of about 0.47, and if you placed the identical pair in two consecutive rounds instead, the swing would fall to $1.11. Using both slots in a single round is therefore slightly more volatile than using one slot twice.

What the layout genuinely offers is a way to hold two intentions at once without waiting, which matters when a round lasts between 10 and 30 seconds and hand-cashing two tickets inside that window is not realistic. Set both automatic cash-outs, accept that the mean is fixed at 97 per cent, and choose the shape you would rather sit through.
